Stick to the plan!

This year is truly the definition of CHALLENGING.  And Eskom isn’t making things any easier.  Change of the familiar brings uncertainty.  Uncertainty can result in fear.  Fear is a double-edged sword.  But how can we manage it?

Some people thrive under pressure.  The adrenalin that pumps through their veins during uncertain times, scary situations, or pressurised circumstances can drive them to achieve great things.

For others, that adrenalin can paralyse them and keep them frozen to the spot.

I’m not sure which is worse?  Feeling trapped and unsure what to do next or rush around like a crazy woman on a mission?  Which one are you?

Growing up I was a Brownie and then a Girl Guide.  Our motto was “Be Prepared” and it’s something that has stuck with me always.  Being prepared for any situation has developed my skills, my knowledge, and my ability to anticipate outcomes.  Because I have learned skills and tools that enable me to be prepared, when a situation occurs, I’m not taken by complete surprise and paralyzed by fear of the unknown.

I believe the same can be said for business – we can learn the skills and develop plans to help us cope and stay focused in trying circumstances.

If we are clear about our direction (goals), what we stand for (brand) and how we do it(processes), then we can step out if confidence to achieve our desired results within the allocated timeframe.

In module 2 we look at the importance of systems and procedures in our business.  As simple or complicated as some of them may be, they form the “plan of action” for each part of our business – so that should the “%$#*!” hit the fan, we can refer to the plan and see what needs to be done, even if it is not our role or job.

We can also prepare for different types of “%$#*!” and act accordingly.

  • If an employee is on leave for 3 weeks – we can plan for someone else to fill in for the time.
  • If an employee is off sick, we can share duties out to be covered until they return.
  • We can plan for equipment maintenance, servicing of vehicles, upgrading of software and hardware.
  • We can prepare for loadshedding by having alternative power sources.

In each of these scenarios, we can stick to the plan, and keep our business running in a manner that is true to our identity, our promise to our customers and is keeping us on track to achieving our goals.  Following the systems and procedures that make up our business allows for consistency in the customer experience and high levels of service excellence!

But what if you don’t have a plan?  An itinerary? A menu from which to choose.

Then its time to make one!  And I would recommend that you start working on it right now!  It’s time to “be prepared” and to get your “A#S” into gear.  Prepare yourself, your mindset, and your business for the new year, with an action plan that helps you to focus, grow and succeed.
